Interesting Holidays

There are a lot of unofficial Holidays that come and go with little to no acknowledgment. Those interesting holidays that make you scratch your head and wonder why it’s a thing. One of those weird holidays is Global Belly Laugh Day. This holiday happens on January 24th around the world. At 1:24pm you’re supposed to throw your arms in the air and laugh. The thought behind it was that it would spread positivity and connection. Another interesting holiday is Lazy Day. This happens every year on August 10th. It gives you an excellent excuse to take the day off and relax. There are also many ways to celebrate. You can stay in bed all day and refuse to do any work, watch a movie marathon, or order food. The possibilities are endless. The next holiday is Crossword Puzzle Day. This holiday is on December 21st. It’s on this day because in 1913, on December 21st the first crossword puzzle was invented. I think that this is terrible timing because who has time to sit down and do a crossword puzzle during the busiest time of the year?

However, some more well-known holidays seem strange for them to be so well known. For example, Groundhog day. Groundhog day is a holiday where depending if a groundhog sees its shadow or not determines the weather for the next 6 weeks. Personally, I do not think this is very accurate. It also gets forgotten most of the time by people who are not in Elementary School. So why does it sometimes appear on the news? Another strange holiday is Earth Day. I would bet that most people don’t even know when Earth Day is. I understand that it’s a day to celebrate the earth, but is it really useful if no one knows when it is. I could argue that at least in my school we celebrate Groundhog Day more than Earth Day.

Veterans Day

Every year comes and goes

As our appreciation for you grows

And we thank you for your service

For going overseas while we stay at home nervous

We celebrate you each year

For protecting us on the frontier

No one can imagine the hard work you go through

To keep our country looking beautifully brand new

You leave us speechless with your persistence

We thank you so much for your assistance

Independence Day Disaster

The morning started in a rush. My best friend, Sally, woke me up at the crack of dawn just to tell me how excited she was. “Come on, come on! Today’s the day!” she yelled in my face. I groaned and rolled over trying my best to ignore her prying the blanket off of me. “Come on! Get up, we have to get ready. We leave in a couple of hours!” Sally exclaimed. “HOURS? Are you serious?” I whined. But knowing that she wasn’t going to let up, I dragged myself out of bed and downstairs. I know waking me up extremely early in the morning might seem a bit extreme, but the Fourth of July was Sally’s favorite holiday and she never did anything halfway. So that’s why at 6 in the morning I was making blueberry pancakes and trying my best to keep my eyes from shutting. After a couple too many energy drinks, I was finally fully awake. By 9 I was in the car headed to the firework stand.

Every year on the Fourth of July, Sally and I go crazy with fireworks. We always start way too early because Sally can’t contain her excitement any longer than 7pm. We usually set off a couple and complain about not being able to see them, until one of our parents hides the lighter from us. When it finally gets dark enough, we light about a million fireworks until we finally run out. Then we sit outside until at least 1 in the morning watching and talking until we fall asleep dreaming of lighting more.

This year was looking no different. We went to the stand expecting to come home with a huge box of fireworks and then wait eagerly until dark. Except, when we got there all the fireworks were sold out. No problem, we can just go to a different stand. But it seemed that every single stand in our area was sold out. It was not looking up for me and Sally’s usual Foruth of July. We had to go home empty-handed. ” What are we going to do?” I asked. “You might just have to watch this year,” my mom told us. So that’s what we did. We had to watch the fireworks and think about all the other kids having fun shooting off fireworks. When the first fireworks started going off Sally looked like she wanted to curl up in a ball forever. After I finally convinced Sally to cheer up we started to have more fun. We made smores, hung out with friends, and went swimming. It turned out that just because not everything happened like we wanted it to, didn’t mean that the whole night was ruined.

Christmas or Thanksgiving?

People gather around to celebrate Christmas and Thanksgiving all around the United States. We all know of these popular holidays, but which one is the best holiday? In my opinion, Christmas will always get the winning prize. Schools let out for two weeks during Christmas instead of one like at Thanksgiving. Having one additional week of no school allows an excellent break for students to mentally prepare themselves for the next semester. Two weeks off of school will enable students to spend more time with their families. Families can travel greater distances to visit relatives and not have to worry as much about getting back in time as they would with only one week.

Christmas is also better than Thanksgiving because of all the traditions that happen. What other holiday has its own music to go along with it? Music that people start listening to as early as October? At Christmas, there’s just a different type of feeling and excitement in the air that only comes from the special holiday. No other holiday gets people as worked up as Christmas does. In addition, there are always so many decorations. You could drive down almost any street and be overjoyed with beautiful shining lights and decorations on lawns. Another tradition most families have is watching Christmas movies. Personally, I love watching Christmas movies, it’s one of the best parts of Christmas. Thanksgiving doesn’t have nearly as many movies as Christmas does, and if there are so many movies about one holiday, it must be a pretty great one, right?

Not only are the traditions at Christmas so unique, but the actual events are enjoyable as well. First of all, nothing can beat the feeling of waking up on Christmas morning and tearing open presents with your family. There’s also the food. I know that Thanksgiving is pretty much all about food, but you can’t tell me that Thanksgiving food is better than Christmas food. There’s just something about Christmas Eve dinner that is so special and irreplaceable. Overall, both Thanksgiving and Christmas are great holidays, but if I had to choose the best one, Christmas would come out on top.

Christmas

Caroling through festive streets

Hoping for the perfect present poking out from under the decorated tree

Restless parents struggling to get things done

It’s the time to celebrate with family

Snowy lawns that look like a soft blanket

Twinkling lights shining on houses

Most wonderful time of the year

Always mountains of delicious food that no one can ever finish

Snowmans hoping for children to stumble upon a magical top hat
